Extreme Heat
22min -
In this episode, host Tim Shaw embarks on a scientific journey of extreme heat. First, Shaw stops by a rooftop BBQ to test the heat of a Fresnel lens, an innovative design used by lighthouses to concentrate light, but it can also be used to create an incredibly hot beam on a single focus point. From heat to beats, Shaw uses cornstarch and water to demonstrate the amazing results of putting heavy bass through his car's sound system. Next stop is the fire station, where Shaw takes a flamethrower to a mega ice cube; and then on to a cafÕ to show the awesome power in two sheets of newspaper. With the help of a clown's party balloons for the next experiment, Shaw immerses an inflated balloon in liquid nitrogen ' 321¯ below zero ' and the results are staggering. Finally, Shaw travels to an abandoned stockyard and risks his beloved Ranchero in an experiment that places his car 30 feet below three cement blocks jointly weighing in at 120 pounds. When the blocks are released, the question is ' will the Ranchero survive, or is Tim about to lose his ride for good?
