It’s 1992, and Sadie Byrne (Niamh Algar) is a highly ambitious and successful undercover police officer with the Met Police. After playing the key role in a major drug bust, Sadie is predictably written out of the story by her male colleagues. And then, she’s suddenly given the chance to work on a case that could make her career. The devastating murder of a young mother on Wimbledon Common, in front of her two-year-old child, shocks the nation. The image of Rachel Nickell is on the front pages of nearly every newspaper and the coverage fuels a climate of fear. Catching the killer becomes a national obsession. That task falls on the shoulders of a newly-promoted detective, Inspector Keith Pedder (Harry Treadaway), but months into the inquiry, Pedder and his team are no further forward and the pressure is starting to build. Following a TV appeal, a suspect is named by members of the public: Colin Stagg (Sion Daniel Young). Pedder calls on the expertise of criminal profiler, Professor Paul Britton (Eddie Marsan), and together, they formulate an untested and dangerous undercover operation that will put Sadie Byrne front and centre. Under the alias “Lizzie James”, her job is to form a relationship with Colin Stagg in the hope that he will eventually reveal his part in Rachel’s murder.
