Episode 1
56min -
A woman in a wheelchair, accompanied by a man, enters an underground car park somewhere in Europe in the early hours; we don’t know where they’re going but there is something very suspicious about them. Fourteen months earlier, we see the same woman - EMMA CHAMBERS - striding up a mountain on holiday with her husband RICHARD, and sons, ALEX and WILL. They seem like a perfect happy family, but we soon realise there are tensions under the surface. EMMA is the British Ambassador to Hungary, and this is Emma and Richard’s first holiday since the death of their daughter two years earlier. Will hasn’t spoken since. He is lost to the world, looking at his phone and making only strange clicking sounds. After a tense evening at their hotel, Emma wakes the next morning to find her family have all disappeared without a trace.
Meanwhile, JULIEN BAPTISTE is back at work, finding runaway teenagers who don’t want to be found. But it seems he is running from something himself, and avoiding his wife CELIA. When he hears about Emma’s missing family, he rushes to Hungary to help. Arriving at the hotel, Julien speaks to Emma and her colleague NADEEM, and promises Emma he will do everything he can to find her family.
Back in the Present Day, Julien finds himself picked up by the police after drunkenly and violently banging on an unknown man’s door. This is a very different Baptiste from the one we know. Celia is once again there to pick up the pieces, but this time she hands him divorce papers: he should never have taken Emma Chambers’ case. Resigned to the breakdown of his marriage, Julien returns home to drink. But his wallowing is interrupted by Emma at his door, in her wheelchair, having travelled across Europe with her nephew, TOBY, to show Julien something she insists he must see.
