Those sports teams, and the hearts they've broken over and over again, have inspired a different name for the city, and the title for this 30 for 30 film: "Believeland." Directed by Ohio native Andy Billman, this evocative documentary will take you on a trip that goes back 50 years and captures the seminal ups and downs of the once-thriving metropolis -- Superman, after all, was created there. Despite the economic and athletic misfortunes, and the T-shirt that reads "God Hates Cleveland," the people still believe and worship Jim Thome and Jim Brown and LeBron James. But they also can't forget Edgar Renteria and John Elway and Michael Jordan, the men who extinguished their dreams of a long-awaited championship. Painful as it is, "Believeland" is a celebration of faith, a testament to how much sports mean to Cleveland, and how much Cleveland means to sports.

What Carter Lost

1h 17min - There's high school football, and then there's Texas high school football. Oddly enough though, one of the greatest teams in state history has been lost to time... and fate. What Carter Lost, directed by Adam Hootnick for ESPN Films' 30 for 30 series, is the saga of that team, the 1988 Dallas Carter Cowboys. With 21 players who were offered college scholarships and several who went on to the NFL, Carter took on the best that Texas had to offer - including the Odessa Permian team that inspired Friday Night Lights - as well as the worst, in a racially charged state-wide dispute over one player's algebra grade and Carter's legitimacy. Somehow, Carter managed to win it all on the field, and somehow, they threw it all away. Perhaps it was the Dallas police officer and Carter fan who said it best after his actions ended a string of crimes that shocked the Carter faithful to their core: "Why would you do this?" Years later, it is a question that still has no easy answer, but through searing interviews with Carter players, coaches and family members, as well as glimpses of their lives today, this film is ultimately about what Carter found.

His lifestyle of excess had come to an end. The world saw Morrison as another hallmark moment in the story of HIV and A.I.D.S. ‘A famous athlete becomes cautionary tale.’ But this isn’t a film about the disease. This is a personal story. A tale about a man who represented the masculine ideal and tasted the spoils accordingly. Then it all went away. How does one react to a life-altering event? For Tommy Morrison it was all about denial. Not just denying the disease that he regularly tested positive for but failing to comprehend that the life he cherished was never coming back. Great boxers often adjust their approach to an opponent in the middle of a fight. Tommy Morrison couldn’t make that adjustment. Instead, he kept blindly fighting the only way he knew how.

And on February 11, 1990, while the odds were technically 42 to 1, it was very much the impossible that happened in a boxing ring in Tokyo, Japan, when James "Buster" Douglas defeated Mike Tyson for the heavyweight championship of the world. The ESPN "30 for 30" documentary "42 to 1" tells the story of just how incredibly unlikely it was. It starts in Columbus, Ohio, where Douglas grew up the son of a boxer, who trained and guided him to become a top-10 heavyweight contender in the mid 1980's. Of course, it was all in the shadow of the rise of "Iron" Mike Tyson, who became a worldwide phenomenon in a remarkable undefeated run to the undisputed title. And by the time their fight was set, Douglas was lightly regarded, merely a stepping stone for bigger fights for the champion. But on the day they met, a series of extraordinary circumstances led to an unimaginable result. If you were a sports fan in 1990, you'll never forget where you were when you heard about Tyson-Douglas. Because, after all, it was impossible.

30 for 30: Deion's Double Play

50min - Brash. Electric. Magnetic. It would be hard to find another athlete whose brilliance on the field was such a manifestation of his persona beyond it as Deion Sanders. Sure, there were other stars who played more than one sport, and there were other figures whose individuality got your attention - but there was no one who did it quite like the man who loved the spotlight so much, he called himself "Prime Time." And there was no instance that encapsulated his abilities, and his conviction in how limitless they were, more spectacularly than a whirlwind 24 hours in October of 1992 - when Sanders sandwiched a pro football game around a pair of postseason baseball games, in two different cities a thousand miles apart. Now, in the upcoming 30 for 30 film Deion's Double Play, NFL Films and director Ken Rodgers along with SMAC Entertainment tell the story of an incredible feat of athleticism - and logistics - starting in Pittsburgh, where Sanders was with the Braves for the National League Championship Series, continuing to Miami, when he played for the Falcons the next day, and returning back to Pittsburgh, where he joined the Braves again that night. It was a race against time, and a stunt in the minds of some. But beneath all the controversy, audacity, and brio, it was also an incredible athlete trying to reconcile a love for two sports at once.

The hostilities progressed even as the Raiders emerged as one of the NFL’s most popular and successful franchises, winning three Super Bowls in the course of eight years in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, and wouldn’t subside until Rozelle’s retirement in 1989. There’s certainly no shortage of significance to the documentary being released just as the Raiders conclude their inaugural season in their latest home, Las Vegas, playing inside a new state-of-the-art stadium. And for a film about two men now deceased, Rodgers and his team strove to take a fresh, alternative approach to telling the story: bringing Al and Pete “back to life” using new, innovative technology commonly known as “deepfake,” and having them narrate their shared tale in first-person. While the re-creations may not be the real thing, the specific stories each character tells are true, and their dialogue is based on a treasure trove of interviews from the NFL Films vault. The result is a startlingly original, entertaining, and revealing look at a seminal football story -and a reminder of the charisma and significance of two giants in the world of sports.
