Dark Days Coming

44min - With “the dark days of winter” almost upon them, the residents of Port Protection are busy using the remaining days of good weather and daylight to stock their freezers and complete crucial chores. Gary sails off on a moose-hunting excursion; Curly and his dog hunt ducks and geese; Hans and Timbi set their sights on halibut; and Amanda is finally settling down after buying a houseboat. But Mother Nature always has a way of surprising even the well-prepared, in this case in the form of a massive storm that looks to threaten all in its path.

First Kill

44min - For the residents of Port Protection, a transition from fall to winter means not only a change in weather conditions but also a change in priorities. Woodsman Curly helps Hans and Timbi with a novel approach to harvesting firewood called a skyline. With the help of neighbor Stuart, Sam takes to the ocean with hopes of scoring halibut to can for the winter. Amanda has a moment of truth when Mary takes her on her first deer hunt, while Gary goes on a buck hunt deep in the Alaskan bush.

Legends in the Woods

44min - As winter looms heavy on the horizon, the residents of Port Protection scramble to finish the critical tasks that will carry them through the long, cold months ahead. Curly Leach, one of the area’s most respected fowl hunters, takes Mary Miller under his wing for a day of duck and goose hunting that tests the limits of their hunting abilities. Sam Carlson goes on the hunt for a Sitka black-tailed deer with one of his oldest hunting partners, his son.

Rough Waters

44min - As winter moves in on Port Protection, the community takes full advantage of some rare and welcome mild weather to increase their chances of survival throughout the season. Sam and Stuart go shrimping, Curly heads out to trap for land otters, Amanda makes essential repairs to her new skiff, and Hans and Timbi construct a smokehouse to get them through the long, dark winter.

The Odyssey

44min - Winter has arrived and with it a scramble to gather any remaining necessities. After a few failed hunts, Gary treks deep into the wilderness in search of a doe. Curly teaches his friend how to chop down her first dead-standing tree to use for firewood. Sam builds a woodstove for new resident Amanda so she’ll have a heat source on her houseboat. And the Porters look to an Alaskan pioneer to assist with an overhaul on their firewood trail.

The Long Road

44min - Winter has arrived, but residents continue to push their limits and expand their means. Gary is getting an early start on marten trapping season. Sam is already eyeing spring, getting a jump on his garden by building a new rain catchment system. Mary heads off into the woods on a solo ptarmigan hunt. And the Porters set out to Prince of Wales Island to purchase a new truck in order to bring back a pair of pregnant goats.

Shell-Shocked

44min - As the unnaturally mild winter comes to a close, the residents of Port Protection tackle repairs and community duties, but must work against nature’s changing obstacles as Gary rebuilds his boardwalk, Curly makes a 100-mile journey to the nearest dump, Mary cuts down a tree for the first time by herself and Sam leads a search and rescue training exercise.

Collapse

44min - As a strange winter comes to a close, Port Protection residents continue to combat the elements. Curly helps Jiggy with a collapsed tree that threatens to push his home off a cliff. Sam and his son take a camping trip to a remote clam bed. The Porters prepare their farm for baby goats but have an accident with a chainsaw. And Amanda puts her livelihood and her friends in harm’s way as she attempts to extract the engines from her houseboat.

Tiny Terrors

44min - The community takes advantage of unseasonably warm winter weather to complete necessary builds and essential chores. As Hans and Timbi call on the community to help build a greenhouse, Sam builds experimental octopus pots and goes fishing, Gary heads inland for river trout and Curly comes to Mary’s aid by helping rid her property of menacing mink.

The End of the End

44min - The Porters enlist volunteers to help put finishing touches on their self-sustaining farm. After a violent storm, Sam and his son help their neighbor Stuart retrieve his sunken skiff and the three men work together to rebuild the community work float. Curly sets out on his first king salmon fishing trip, hoping to get a head start on the summer season. And Mary grapples with her poor health and making the trip to civilization to see her doctor.
