Recently separated Rebecca and Enrique struggle to navigate their new family dynamic as the holiday season approaches. For the benefit of their two kids, Izzy and Sam, they attempt Christmas as usual, but it’s impossible under the awkward circumstances. When they take the kids to visit Santa, Izzy and Sam cleverly notice that Santa’s beard is real. Challenged about his authenticity, Santa gives them a magic pen and tells them that if they write him a letter from the heart, that their wish just might come true. Convinced he’s the real Santa and not just a helper, the kids rush home to try out the magic pen. They are beyond excited when the next morning a cute puppy named Noel shows up at their door. Meanwhile, Rebecca feels intense pressure to deliver a new children's book for which she has already received an advance, while Enrique works as the General Manager at his family’s Mexican restaurant. Heartbroken that they won’t be together as a family for Christmas, Enrique and Rebecca go to counseling to try and patch up their marriage. More of the kid’s wishes come true with a little help from Enrique’s mother Camilla and his sister Maria who’s home from college for the holidays. But things get complicated when a new Assistant G.M. arrives at the restaurant named Candy, whose personality is just as sweet as her name and Rebecca hires a talented and charming illustrator from the UK named Liam to help her meet her deadline. Both Candy and Liam end up spending time with the kids, and although Izzy and Sam initially really like them, they start to feel uncomfortable with these new friends hanging around their Mom and Dad. They look to the magic of Santa’s pen to help bring their parents back together. As they get closer to Christmas, and the imminent deadline for Rebecca to pitch her final book concept, the family dynamic is at risk of falling apart, and time is running out for any Christmas magic to help keep them all together.
