Shortly after her 13th birthday, a young girl and her family living in wartime Amsterdam go into hiding from the Nazis, under strict rules of silence.
It is October 1942, and the two families are worried when a plumber is called to fix their broken toilet. Meanwhile, Anne adjusts to life with the Van Daan family.
Otto is shocked to discover that the building has had to be sold, and everyone worries that the new owner will demand access to the annex. Anne is irritated by all her housemates.
Anne is blowing out the candles on her birthday cake, surrounded by friends. Suddenly she wakes up and remembers she is in the annexe, and her birthday will be a modest affair.
Anne and her family are woken up by the sound of intruders downstairs. They meet Mr Dussel and the Van Daans, and they all huddle together on the stairs.
