Sugar Hill Gang
40min -
There are few more bizarre and unsettling tales in popular music than that of the Sugarhill Gang. Hip-Hop pioneers, their first single, “Rapper’s Delight,” sold 14 million copies to become the best-selling hip hop record of all time, and helped Sugar Hill records become the pre-eminent hip hop label of the 1980s. But over time the group’s two key members, Master Gee and Wonder Mike, lost their rights to their music, their group’s name, and even their own stage names, as impersonators took their place. Their battle to literally reclaim their identity continues to this day – a story told in depth by the original surviving Sugarhill Gang members on this episode of ‘Unsung.’
